Well… this blog post is coming waaaaaaaay later than I intended.
Between family life and trying to get my iron levels back up, I am not sure they have ever been “normal”, things have been a bit of a slog. Nothing serious, just one of those lovely age related dips that left me feeling as flat as a pancake for far longer than I would like to admit.
Eldest also had a week off school with tonsilitis if he’d had tonsils. Apparently, as kids get older, they shrink (the tonsils not the kids!). You learn something new every day.
SATS are on the horizon too. He’s actually excited about them! The school are offering food and snacks and I think this could be his motivation!
As the weather has been improving, so have our days out. With iron levels suddenly jumping, I’ve been trying to do a lot more walking and ended up on a path from Hanwell to Richmond (6 miles!) I took bus back but had a brilliant time with friend. We saw a slow worm and a Little Egret (ta very much google!)
For any fellow nature lovers, I have to recommend the app Seek by iNaturalist🔗. Not an ad, I promise. This app genuinely got us through lockdown, and we always come back to it in spring and summer. You just take a photo of something in nature, upload it, and it identifies it for you. Thanks to it, we have discovered cucumber spiders, candy cane spiders, pearl veneer moths, and loads more.
It is not perfect, we once tested it on the neighbour’s cat, which it confidently identified as a tiger, but overall it is brilliant.
Anyway, digressing so back to the point. And 🗺️✨Our Story.
This week it’s Lisa and Poppy from @poppyrecommends🔗 . I LOVE their Instagram page. So many gorgeous ideas and reviews for days out with kids. Recent highlights include a dog friendly meal out with their daschund Minnie to the appropriately named @thehoundchiswick🔗.
Lisa’s pic of the scotch egg literally made me drool!
Plus a trip to the cinema to see The Magic Faraway Tree film. Something very much on my to do list!
While we’re on the topic of magic woodlands, I’ll just jump in with a book recommendation for fans of Faraway Tree. Andy Shepherd’s The Wood Where Magic Grows was kindly sent to me by Piccadilly Press and it’s FABULOUS….adventure, nature and a fading green magic that needs Iggy and Cal’s help!
In the words of the beautiful Benson Boone, Andy’s gorgeous book is both mystical and magical.
Check out Andy’s page and other books here: The Wood Where Magic Grows | Andy Shepherd Writer🔗
And with that, I’m SO excited to introduce mum and daughter, Lisa and Poppy’s Q&A.
As mentioned, their Instagram page is full of lovely ideas for days out, along with updates on Poppy’s incredible cheerleading triumphs. And when she is not exploring or cheerleading, Poppy can usually be found at Stagecoach, at gymnastics, or out on walks with her family.
Busy bees!

Thank you both so much for taking the time to kick back and chat about books with us!
Lisa, Do you remember the first story you every loved?
L: Old Bear was the first book I remember really loving! I have a copy I bought for Poppy to share with her.
It’s really lovely you get to share such a special story with Poppy! What other memories of stories do you have as a child?
L: I had the Beatrix Potter collection and would read them a lot. Winnie the Pooh was also another go to book I would re-read.
Poppy, what are your favourite stories? Is there one you could read or listen to over and over again?
P: Mog is my favourite! I also like Roald Dahl books, Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Lisa, how easy do you find it to discover new children’s books and stories today?
Poppy’s started reading the Roald Dahl stories, so we do look in Sainsbury’s at their selection to see what they have and we have come across new ones there. Little People, Big Dreams is another favourite of hers. We have 15 now which we add to regularly.
Your Instagram page is all about discovering new adventures. Which children’s story character would you like to come on your next adventure? Where would you take them?
L: For full disclosure, I have written a book for Poppy! It’s being proof read. But the first story is about adventure in the woods, with a second story in the future. (Editor’s note: Wow that’s brilliant! Children love seeing themselves in books. This will be something Poppy can keep with her always)
Poppy, I’ve seen you love cheerleading. Congratulations on you competition in March! Your Squad adds 2 new members. Both of them are characters from children’s books. Who are they and what are their positions?
P: Baloo from Jungle Book…He’d make a good back spot. And Harry Potter would be a good base. His wand could help if anyone fell! (Editor’s note: Great choices Poppy!)
And a question for you both! Which story best captures something special about your family?
L: The Untold Story of Father Christmas by Alison and Mike Battle. Poppy and I love Christmas and we have been to Lapland for the past 5 years. This story capsulates everything magical about the days and memories we have there. We have the best memories as a family there and reading that story makes all of them come back. Poppy will remember and recall different parts of the day each time we read it.
Thank you so much to you both!
It’s so lovely to hear how stories play such a special part in your family. I’m looking forward to seeing more adventures on your page and reading you book Lisa!
